“Virtuosity of Forgetting” is the newest branch of our years-long “Stamina of Curiosity” project. We are stumbling closer to the edge of where the ground of making gives way to the groundlessness of performing for witnesses. Distance collaboration. Mysterious texts and voice memos. Coming together to consider the new while discovering more that is new in our existing works “The Delicate Hour” and its predecessor “Sharks Before Drowning.” We keep realizing (with frequent bursts of hilarity, sudden silences, furrowed brows) how little we know. This piece was originally called “Virtuosity of Memory,” a phrase that came up frequently when I was making “My Name is a Blackbird.” As time passes, I am/we are more interested in how memory and forgetting collide and conflate, confuse and compound, catalyze and catastrophize. Mostly, there are people we meet anew–each other, you, our lost selves and un/forgotten loves–when we stop pretending to know.
